Captain Jim Smith

Captain Jim Smith has been a U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain since 1999, holding a Towing Endorsement and extensive experience across multiple vessel types. His maritime background includes operating power-driven vessels up to 105 feet and commanding 22-passenger airboats, reflecting a versatile and well-rounded seamanship career.

Jim originally earned his Master Great Lakes and Inland Waters license before expanding his credentials to Near Coastal, allowing him to operate along coastal routes and open waters. Since 2014, he has proudly served as a USCG-approved instructor at The Captain School, where he shares his real-world knowledge and passion for safety with aspiring mariners.

A full-time resident of Marco Island since 2004, Jim brings both local expertise and Midwest work ethic to every class he teaches. Originally from Michigan, he also served his country as an Army Airborne Paratrooper, carrying forward a lifelong commitment to discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
