Train The Trainer

This 40-hour training course is an in-person course conducted by a US Coast Guard Approved Instructor. The course examination and all practical components will be conducted in person.

Each student who successfully completes this course will have the knowledge and understanding to instruct and teach classes as their license permits.

The objectives of this course include:

• Planning and preparation of effective teaching and instruction
• Selection of appropriate methods of instruction and teaching materials
• Evaluation of the teaching and learning process

PREREQUISITES

Trainee instructors wishing to deliver training in the competence standards required by the STCW Convention should already have the necessary technical knowledge and be qualified in the task for which training is to be conducted.

For example:

• Trainee instructors intending to teach navigation will normally have had experience as deck officers
• Those wishing to teach marine engineering should be qualified engineers

This model course assumes that the trainee instructors are appropriately qualified in the technical aspects of their subjects.

Any applicant who has successfully completed our Train the Trainer course will satisfy:

• The training in effective instructional techniques and assessment techniques requirements of 46 CFR 10.402(b)(2)(iii)(A), 10.405(a)(1), and 10.405(d);  AND
• The training in effective instructional techniques and assessment techniques requirements of STCW Code Section A-I/6, as amended 2010, meeting the National
• Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 03-14(Ch-1) Enclosure (2) for Qualified Instructors; AND
• The training in assessment techniques requirements of STCW Code Section A-I/6, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 19-14(Ch-4) for Qualified Assessors.
